playing cards

For this project we was supporting the Tom prince charity, and each of us had to design a playing card and design a box to put the cards in, then we went down Portsmouth to rise as much money as possible.
Paul gave us a playing card and what ever card we got we had to base our design around it.
I got the 4 of clubs- the first thing i did keeping in mind we had to base the cards around people which we look up to (famous people) or superhero's , i started to look at super heros which came in four's.

research:

i find that there wasn't many superhereo's which came in fours but here are the few i found.

-The Fanatic Four
-The Incredibles
-I am Number Four
- Avatar

These are mainly the only ones i have found, i didn't really want to go into villeins as i was trying to show how strong Tom was, and showing all the good tom has and is still doing, i went with the fanatic four as they was normal people and came super heros through their own chose, and in a way this is Tom, as he was just like anyone of us then he came something fanatic help all he has achieved and all himself and the charity will achieve for people.

As i have got the design of the card down i then needed to, decided on the layout of the card, as the card is based around tom and his charity i wanted to add words in that people thought about tom, so i went on the the website and started to look through all the things people have said.

i first tried drawing the words around the Fanatic Four and see if i can do a whirl effect but i didn't like the look of it, so after mind mapping and thinking about what i could do, i reached the idea of making the Fanatic Four out of the words, so i started to draw each hero and adding the words in that symbolised tom the best, and this is what i came up with.

This is what it looked like after i started to colour the image in, as you can see i have added the words in, and also did it in the power of each person, for example Mr.Fanatic as his power is to stretch the length of any body part, i decided to make the writing and words look like they are stretching as well, i did the same with the others as well but in there own powers.

The invisible girl- can go invisible and make force shields be reflecting light, so i did the writing in a bubble effect and in a blue colour.
The human touch- can set him self on fire and go hotter then the sun and not feel the effect of the heat, so the writing is made out of flames.
and finally The Thing- is made out of stuff which is harder then rock, hardest thing known to man, and i made the writing look like stone.

and doing the 4 of clubs i added it in the background and using the Fanatic four logo as the four of clubs.

i then took it into photoshop to colour and make it look more like a comic book, and more like a card and this is what is turned out like.

sadly you cant see the dotted effect i added to the image, to make it look like an old style comic book, i added 4 of clubs on each corner, so when playing cards with them you can see what card it is without having to look in the middle of the card, i added a green background as it went well with the dotted look and made the card look much older as well, and added my name on the side to show who made the card.

The only thing i was angry about was the way " The human torch" turned out, as it looks sloppy and uncompleted, which doesn't look good, if i had the time to go back i would of given him a flame body coming downwards so he would have a body not just a green blob.

slides on research and ideas:

" each hero can be on the card, but only the out line of the hero. i want words and feelings that summed up tom prince as a person. the words will make up each hero and i will change the of the text to make it look like each hero. i will also try and make the text look like when they are using their powers.
make an image of a hero/ super hero and use the 4 of clubs as orbs / power bolts coming out of his or her hands, killing an evil person or even killing the cancer.
God Brahma, it is a Hindu God, with four arms and 3 faces, i can do two of the faces looking ill and un well, but the facing face looking happy and well, showing toms strength of hiding the cancer, in each hand can be a club or an item to do with tom.
We can make each club like a different element (earth, wind, fire and water) and this can, make up an image of tom with all the elements coming into one, or each element can turn into Antonio De Ulloa in 1735, the first known element found.
end.

i reminded that we have 5 elements after doing this power point. so it wouldn't of worked, or i could of just cancelled out one of the elements. this was just some ideas i was thinking out along side the mind mapping i did.

This is Antonio Da Ulloa, the first known person to find the first element.

God Brahma.
The elements.

Box idea:

we also had to design the box which the cards will sit in, i couldn't really redesign the layout of the box as my idea was getting every ones work and making it look like tomes face or even the logo of toms charity.

on this advert, " tom price" moves from the centre to the left hand side, and then the logo and my playing card comes from the slide to rest where they are now.

Poem narrative.

After having a go at the "Jack and Jill" story board, Paul then gave us a Poem each, which he believed we would do great with making up a picture story for the poem.
The poem i received name was called  "The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner " this poem is about people sailing for the first time, and what it was like for the sailors, i started by drawing my story by hand, the then scanning it into Photoshop to then colour the images in, i went with just on block colour for the slides to made the story look old and worn out.

The Fair Breeze Blew, The White Foam Flew, The Furrow Followed Free:

this is the first slide of my poem narrative, i went with this style of drawing for two reasons really, the first i love drawing cartoon pictures, they are more fun to draw and then look at after you have finished and the second reason is that by drawing things in a cartoon manner i can give objects and inanimate objects have emotions and tracts that people have.

i have added the poem on a scroll on the side of the page, I  decided to add the poem onto a scroll, as i am going for an old look and feel, and the oldest form of documents where on scrolls and was used around the time, they first sailed the seas.

We Were The First That Ever Burst Into That Silent Sea.

This is the second slide of my story board, as i was making it all cartoony and making inanimate objects have personality, the first thing i thought of when i saw this part of the poem, was a person diving into the water off a diving board, and as the poem is on about sailing, i made the boat look like a diver hitting the water.

Again putting the scroll on the side of the image, out of the way and easy to read.

Dawn Dropt The Breeze, The Sails Dropt Down, Twas Sad As Sad Could Be;

i made the sea crying to show the emotion of the sea being sad and showing the feeling of the sailors, i also made the sound of a crying person look like the water effect just to show they are linked and it looked better following the same pattern.

And We Did Speak Only To Break The Silence Of The Sea! All In A Hot And Copper Sky, The Bloody Sun, At Noon,

once again i made the sea have all the emotion, by shh'ing the sailors as they shell the sea, the hammer is showing they have broken the silence and not having a care in the world, as it is an adventure, and an adventure is never small and quite.

Right up Above The Mast Did Stand, No Bigger Than The Moon.
the top image, is the moon i went for just for the fact it is more cartoony and has more human emotion then the second picture does, the first moon is based on a chav getting in to a fight, and starting on something or (in this case) some one, i made the sailor look scared as it matched what the poem was saying about being no bigger then the moon, showing us how close and clear the moon looked that night, another reason why i didn't go with the second moon or "mooncat" it doesn't really go with the rest of the slides, it is a bit out of place, as i have been using human emotions  not animals emotions and feelings.

Day After Day, Day After Day, We Stuck, Nor Breathe Nor Motion; As Idle As A Painted Ship Onpon A Painted Ocean.

I put the clound holding his breathe in this slide, and used the same cloud as in the first one i used him/ her to blow away the white foam away from the boat, and added and paint brush, as once a painting is painted it cant be moved, its like taking a picture.

 Water, Water, Everywhere, And All The Boards Did Shrink;

This part of the story is saying the sea and waters are that rough it feels like the ship is breaking, and falling apart. so to show this i made the sea look like it is holding the ship in place while it is using the ship like a pushing bag, and again i gave the sea human emotions, such as hands, arms, muscles and even diving glasses, just to add a bit more detail into the face of the waves.

Water, Water, Everywhere, Nor Any Drop To Drink.

the last slide is showing that even though they are thousands of miles of water around them, they can not drink a drop of it, so i got the ship passing through a skull is showing that every second they pass through the water every drop is as deadly as the last, showing it will all end in death it seems like it, such is a bit grim, but they are adventures all part of the job.

Jack and Jill dan frost story board.

workshop: we had to make a story of "Jack and Jill" just with shapes and no words, we had to make the characters out of different shapes we got handed, and build and create the story so people would understand the difference between each objects and things within the story boards, this was setting us up and getting us ready for the second story we had to make from a poem.

slide one:

Here is the first slide, as you can see we was given lot of random pictures and shapes, i went with the chinese blocks and shapes, as i thought it could look good with a slight out look to it, "Jack" on the left of the two, is made out of 3 shapes and "Jill" on the right has been made of 4 shapes.

Slide 2:

slide two is "jack and Jill" walking up the hill, i made out of arrows leading and making it look like this is the path that they took to get to the well which is placed on top of the hill, the well it jut simply two shapes a block and an arrow, i added the sun in just to fill up the page a bit more, and i liked the look of it.

 Slide 3:

This is a picture of the well, with water over flowing, just so people can get the picture a little bit more, instead of having just a blow, again still using shape which are more or less the same and following the same theme as the last slide.

 Slide 4:

"Jack" falling from the hill, and hitting the hard ground. i made the ground using the same or similar shapes as before, and made it look as hard and rough as i could to symbolise the ground, i placed "Jack" into a falling motion.

 Slide 5:

And then "Jack" hitting the ground and breaking his crown (head), to do this i had to cut his head in half and then just re-sick the top part back on, wear it looks like he has broken his crown but not to over the top.

after we made all the images, we then scanned them all into Photoshop to colour the slides in, i went again with simple colours to match the shapes, and the type of story board it is. I did the same blue background on each slide. I don't really know why i coloured "Jack" and "Jill" in these colours, i just got people in my class to pick happy and random colours for me.
